Indiana, nicknamed the Hoosier State (though no one really knows why), was admitted to the Union in 1816. It has a population of around 6.2 million, and it is the 38th largest state. The climate is generally mild, ranging from a low of 25 degrees F. in the winter to a high of 80 degrees F. in summer.
Programs and grants supporting artists and art administrators are offered throughout the state; for example, the Lilly Endowment offers fellowship awards to Indianapolis artists. The state is also home to some interesting museums and galleries, including the Museum of Miniature Houses and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art (both in Indianapolis).
