Photography Career Statistics
- Photographers held about 130,000 jobs in 2002
- Over half of all photographers are self-employed; a much higher proportion than other occupations
- Salaried workers tend to be in portrait or commercial photography, Newspapers, magazines, television broadcasters, and advertising firms employ most of the others
- Jobs are concentrated in metropolitan areas
- Competition for jobs is fierce, since there are more talented and qualified photographers than there are jobs
- Employment projections are average through 2012
- Portrait and commercial photographers will have better prospects than others
- Median earnings for salaried photographers in 2002 were $24,040
- The middle 50% earned between $17,740 and $34,910
- The top 10% earned over $49,920
- Newspaper/periodical photographers earned an average of $31,460
- Many people start out by working for an experienced photographer – this is valuable experience and can help the apprentice make important connections, even if the pay is low for a few years
- Knowledge of computers, graphics, marketing, and electronics or repair can all be valuable
