Originally founded as a plantation by Rovert Hackley in 1823, Tampa now has over 303,000 residents living in an area of 170.6 square miles (one-third of which is water). The city's leaders have made a strong commitment to the arts by creating a public art tour that includes displays such as murals, paintings, sculpture, and other forms of artistic expression located around the city. The area has several museums, art studios, and private galleries. The universities and schools in the area have a strong commitment to arts education, as do art centers and galleries that offer classes and workshops that often taught by working artists.
